Passing Cars

What Comes Back

Life moves along like cars on the pavement

we watch out the window, as time passes by

Years upon years spent blindly complacent

age challenged nothing, I had an ample supply

Now, the mirror shows an image that time took its toll on

the reflection of one who was blind to his fate

Like Rip Van Winkle, I aged with every yawn

creating a map of my life, on my face

Some days it was kind and it showed me its treasures

other days life would leave me like a stray, under attack

And I learned that they both provided me pleasure

I just wish I knew how to get some of them back

I suppose, if I'm honest, they all linger somehow

each day, those I've touched, reveal small pieces of me

Another young soul with his hand on the same plough

continuing the journey, granting this guarantee

That we are all here together, sweet mementos collecting

trophies to rest on the mantle of time

The good and the bad filter, finding its way back to me

another part of this journey in life's grand design
